Okay so Jan van Riebeeck Hoërskool, named after the oke who showed up uninvited in 1652 and never left, which is honestly very on brand for the City Bowl. The school is sitting right there in Cape Town proper, mountain views, good vibes, and they named it after a man who is basically the original load shedding, came and disrupted everything and nobody could stop him. 447 learners and 32 educators, that is actually a solid 14 to 1 ratio, which means your teacher actually knows your name AND your excuses. No hiding at the back and sleeping, bru. This is not one of those schools where you can ghost your way through Grade 11. The class is small enough that when you did not do your homework, everyone heard about it including the lady at the tuck shop. The school's own description is so dry it makes the Karoo look like Knysna. "It is a fee-paying school with no boarding facilities." That is it. That is the whole pitch. No boarding facilities, which honestly makes sense because who needs boarding when you are five minutes from the V&A Waterfront and the 14th best coffee shop in De Waterkant. The City Bowl location is doing all the heavy lifting while the description is just standing there in khaki shorts holding a clipboard. Overall verdict: Jan van Riebeeck is a small, well-staffed school in arguably the most prime location in the country, which means the real education is just walking outside and realising your school is prettier than most people's holiday destinations.
