Okay so Chris Hani Secondary School on the Cape Flats, where the government decided that one teacher handling 31 learners at the same time is completely fine. Thirty one kids, one teacher, one whiteboard, and somebody's phone playing music from the back row. The WCED sat down, did the maths, and said "ja that's enough educators, send it." Meanwhile the teacher is trying to explain quadratic equations while also being a social worker, a referee, and a part-time load shedding coordinator all at once. 1343 learners in this school. That is not a school, that is a small town. You could lose your whole friend group between first period and break and only find them again at the tuck shop queue. And the tuck shop queue at a school with 1343 kids is basically the N2 at peak hour, nobody is moving and everyone is frustrated. But listen, no fees. Not a cent. In a city where some schools in the Southern Suburbs charge more per term than a return flight to Joburg, Chris Hani is out here saying come learn for free. That is not nothing. That is actually a big deal. The teachers showing up every day for that ratio deserve a Bells and a sit down. Overall verdict: overcrowded, understaffed, and running on government fumes, but carrying more of Cape Town's future on its back than any R50 000 a year school ever will.
