Hoërskool Patriot in Witbank, eish, where do we start. The name alone, "Patriot," sounds like the school was named during a very intense rugby match when someone had too much brandy and said "nee man, ons noem hom PATRIOT." Very dramatic for a school in Witbank, a town that smells like coal and ambition, mostly coal. 991 learners, 52 teachers, ratio of 19.1 to 1. That means every teacher is basically running a small taxi rank in their classroom. Standing room only, someone is definitely sitting on a windowsill in Geography. But here is the wild part, these people pulled a 99.4% matric pass rate out of that chaos. Nearly a thousand kids crammed into classrooms like it is peak hour on the N4, and they STILL almost everyone passed. That is not a school, that is a pressure cooker with a rugby field. The school description is so dry it makes Witbank summer look humid. "Does not offer boarding facilities." Okay we get it, go home, we do not want you here after hours. No frills, no boarding, no nonsense. Just show up, learn your CAPS content, pass your matric, and get out. Which, honestly, based on that pass rate, is exactly what 99.4% of them did. Overall verdict: Patriot looks like a no-nonsense dusty coal town school from the outside, but it is quietly one of the best performing public schools you will find, jy weet hoe is dit.
