Makhosana Manzini High School in Mkhuhlu, Mpumalanga. Not Cape Town, not Sandton, not anywhere near a Vida e Caffè or a school blazer that costs more than a second-hand Corolla. This is deep Mpumalanga, where the school runs on grit, ancestors, and apparently one teacher for every 37 learners. Thirty-seven. Bra, that is not a class, that is a taxi rank. The teacher walks in and just starts shouting like a gaatjie, "Maak plek, maak plek, everyone against the wall!" Now listen, 47 educators for 1752 kids. Do the maths, which honestly you might struggle to do because your maths teacher was also doing Life Sciences, History, and probably fixing the school gate on Fridays. Finding your classroom must have been a full day mission. You did not go to school, you went on a school hike. Assembly alone was basically a small music festival. But here is where I have to stop and actually take my hat off, because a 96.3% matric pass rate with those numbers is not a flex, that is a miracle. That is not a school, that is a factory that turns chaos into certificates. While private schools in the Southern Suburbs are charging R50k a year to pass the same exam, Makhosana Manzini is out here doing it with one pen between three learners and pure determination. Overall verdict: looks like a school held together with cable ties and community spirit, but it produces results that would make your fancy private school cry into its sparkling water.
