Ikhethelo Secondary School (Bethal)

Bethal, Mpumalanga. Not exactly the school brochure destination people are fighting over, but here we are. Ikhethelo Secondary is sitting in Bethal with 1,801 learners and only 55 teachers, which works out to one teacher for every 32.7 kids. Thirty two point seven. That teacher is not teaching a class, that is managing a small township. By the time the teacher gets to the back row to check your work, you have already finished matric, had kids of your own, and those kids are also in the back row. Now the school description says, and I am quoting directly here, that it "follows the National Senior Certificate curriculum under the CAPS framework." Broe, that is literally just saying we do school here. That is the bare minimum written like it is an achievement. That is like me saying I follow the tradition of eating food under the hunger framework. The description also makes a point of telling us there is no boarding facility, which, fair enough, because where would you put them, on top of each other? But here is the thing, an 89.6% matric pass rate with almost 1,800 learners and 55 overworked teachers is genuinely impressive. That is not luck, that is teachers running on cold water and determination while the department counts paper clips somewhere in Pretoria. Overall verdict: Chaotic, overcrowded, undersupported, and somehow still producing results, like a pressure cooker that should have exploded but made the best pap you ever tasted.
