Derona Academy rolls up with 196 kids and 22 teachers, which means the ratio is basically one teacher per small family braai. Eight point nine kids per educator. That is not a school, that is a tutoring centre with a gate and a flag. And look, a hundred percent matric pass rate sounds impressive until you remember there are 196 learners in the whole school combined, primary and high school together. Bru, my cousin's grade eight class had more people than this entire institution. You could probably do roll call at assembly and still have time to finish your vetkoek. The "academy" in the name is doing a lot of heavy lifting when your combined school fits inside a Checkers. The school's own description is giving us nothing. No ethos, no sports, no proudly whatever, just "we follow CAPS and we have no boarding." That is literally the minimum legal requirement for existing as a school in South Africa. They described themselves the way you fill in a government form, jy weet hoe is dit. No soul, just compliance. Which, honestly, is very on brand for the area. Overall verdict: Derona Academy is a small, intimate school with a perfect pass rate and the energy of a Home Affairs office that somehow gets results.
