Concordia High School in Knysna, where 37 teachers walk in every Monday morning knowing they have to somehow educate 1335 teenagers. Thirty seven. That is not a staff room, that is a broom cupboard with a kettle. One teacher for every 36 kids, which means your teacher basically did a headcount, saw the number, and just started praying. The WCED said "here are your resources" and handed them a whiteboard marker and a dream. But listen, it is a no-fee school in Knysna, so the government is technically paying, which means the government is also technically responsible for the fact that your teacher was simultaneously teaching you, marking someone else's book, and mentally planning their resignation letter. Thirty six learners per teacher in a town where the biggest drama is whether the Garden Route Mall has load shedding or not. Jy weet hoe is dit. And still, STILL, they pushed out an 89.1% matric pass rate. With those numbers. With that ratio. In Knysna. That is not a school result, that is a miracle. Those teachers deserve a statue on the Knysna waterfront, not a parking space and a government salary that arrives late. Overall verdict: Concordia is basically a teacher doing the impossible with nothing, and somehow pulling it off, absolute respect, but someone in Cape Town needs to send more staff before those 37 legends quit and become tour guides.
