Fisherhaven Academy in Hermanus, where the whales come to watch and even THEY feel sorry for you. This is a no-fee school, which sounds great until you realise the government is basically running the whole show, and we all know how that goes. Load shedding hits, the one projector the school owns goes dark, and your teacher just shrugs and says "open to page 47." Jy weet hoe is dit. Now listen, 349 learners and 18 educators. That is a 19.4 to 1 ratio, which means your teacher is basically trying to give attention to 19 of you at the same time. That is not a classroom, that is a taxi rank with a whiteboard. You raise your hand for help in Grade 10 and by the time the teacher gets to you, you are writing your trial exams. The poor educators are not teaching, they are surviving. But honestly, Hermanus is beautiful, the ocean is right there, and there is something genuinely solid about a school that does not charge you a cent and still shows up every day. The kids coming out of Fisherhaven have real grit, because nothing was handed to them, not even a textbook that did not have someone else's name crossed out on the inside cover. Overall verdict: Fisherhaven Academy is basically a school held together with dedication, sea air, and prayer, but the kids it produces are tougher than the tourists paying R800 a night to watch whales down the road.
