Umyezo Wama Apile High School in Grabouw. Right there in the middle of apple farm country, Western Cape. The name literally means "apple orchard" and honestly that is poetic because this school is also full of things that fell far from the tree. Two thousand and forty one learners. Fifty four teachers. Do that math quickly, that is 37.8 kids per teacher. Thirty seven point eight. That teacher is not teaching a class, that teacher is managing a taxi rank. A full Bellville taxi rank, peak hour, everyone pushing, nobody listening. The teacher in front is just vibing and hoping someone gets to their destination eventually. Now the matric pass rate is 79.1%. Which sounds okay until you remember there are 2041 learners in this school. That means roughly one in five did not make it through matric. That is not a statistic, that is a whole street of kids. A whole street in Grabouw just watching the others celebrate while they figure out what next. The school is free though, government no-fee, so at least nobody is paying for that experience. Which is the one thing they got right. Grabouw itself is a vibe. Surrounded by mountains, apple farms, and absolutely nothing else. If you miss the bus you are not catching another one. You are just standing there looking at an apple tree wondering where your life went wrong. Load shedding hits different when you are trying to study and the whole valley goes dark and the only light is from a farmer's generator two farms away. Overall verdict: An apple orchard school in apple country, producing results that are about 79% ripe and sending the rest back to the farm to try again.
