That ratio of 35.7 to 1 means your teacher is basically a DJ at a festival, just trying to keep the crowd calm and hoping nobody starts a moshpit in the back row. By the time she gets to the kid in the last desk, the first kid has already forgotten what subject they were doing. Maths? Life Orientation? Does it matter at this point? And look, no fees, which is genuinely respect, the government is covering the bill. But we all know what that means in practice. The WCED sends a memo, the principal frames it nicely, and then load shedding takes out the photocopier on the day of the test anyway. The worksheets arrive in week three. Half of them are for a different grade. Classic. Cape Flats wind hits different too. Sports day at this school is not athletics, it is a survival course. The kid who wins the 100m is the one who figured out how to run WITH the southeaster instead of against it. That is not PE, that is life skills. Thirty one teachers holding down over a thousand children somewhere between Mitchells Plain and a prayer, and somehow they pitch up every day. That is not a school, that is a calling. Overall verdict: Absolutely chaotic, completely under-resourced, and those teachers deserve a Bells and a bonus, because they are carrying the whole Cape Flats on their back.
