Hope And Light Community Welfare (City Of Cape Town)

Okay so "Hope And Light Community Welfare." That is a lot of words for one school name. It sounds less like a school and more like a charity that collects old clothes outside Pick n Pay. "Yes hello where does my child go to school?" "Hope and Light Community Welfare." "Eish, are they okay? Do they need a food parcel?" Christian ethos in Helderberg. Classic. So every assembly starts with a prayer, the Grade 8s are still doing the Lord's Prayer from memory, and somewhere there is a teacher who calls sin by its first name. You know the one. She marks your test AND your soul. Helderberg is already a vibe, sitting there between Somerset West and the mountain, very "we are almost Cape Town but not quite." The school fits right in. 389 learners and 21 educators. That is an 18.5 to 1 ratio which is honestly not bad, respect where it is due. But 389 kids at a school called Community Welfare does raise the question of how much welfare is actually happening. Someone is paying R15,560 a year for Grade 12. That is not welfare money. That is "my parents skipped a holiday to Plett" money. R12,300 for Grade R. Your child is five years old and still eating crayons and you are already paying twelve grand. The crayons are not included. Combined school means Grade R all the way to Grade 12 under one roof. So the little ones in Grade R are sharing a school with matrics who are stressed, sleep deprived, and counting down to rage. That is not a school. That is a documentary waiting to happen. Overall verdict: Hope and Light, short on both, but the fees are very bright.
