Hanover Primary School, sitting out there in the Northern Cape like it's daring you to find it on Google Maps. Hanover. Not Johannesburg. Not Cape Town. Not even Upington. Hanover. The kind of town where the biggest event of the year is probably a goat escaping from someone's yard and half the learners chasing it down the main road during break time. But respect to them for existing out there in the Karoo heat where the wind is dry, the roads are long, and the nearest Checkers is probably a two-hour drive away. Now let's talk about this ratio. 927 learners and 31 educators. That is 30 children per teacher, which means your teacher is not teaching, she is surviving. She is doing crowd control. She is a referee, a social worker, a substitute parent, and somehow also supposed to explain fractions. The CAPS curriculum says "differentiated learning." Your teacher says "as long as nobody is on fire, we are fine." And the school description is giving us absolutely nothing to work with. No motto. No vision. No "we produce leaders of tomorrow." Just, we exist, we have learners, we follow the curriculum, no boarding. That is the most honest school description in South Africa. Chapeau. They are not even trying to impress you. Hanover Primary said what it said and sat down. Overall verdict: It is not fancy, it is not flush, but it is feeding nearly a thousand kids knowledge in the middle of nowhere for free, and that is actually kind of legendary.
