Pniel-Landgoed Primêre Skool is out there in the Northern Cape doing its thing with 174 kids and 8 teachers. Eight. One teacher for every 21.8 kids, which means at any given moment, at least one group of children is completely unsupervised and probably doing something that will only make sense at their therapy sessions twenty years later. No fees though, and listen, respect where respect is due, the government is covering this one. But also, the government is covering this one, so you already know the vibe. That ratio of nearly 22 kids per teacher is not a classroom, that is a teacher standing in the middle of a taxi rank hoping everyone gets where they need to go and nobody causes a scene before lunch. 174 learners in the whole school. That is smaller than some Matric classes in Cape Town. The tuck shop probably sells one thing and it sells out by Tuesday. Sports day is basically everyone versus everyone because there are not enough kids to make proper teams. And with 8 educators running the whole operation, load shedding probably hits harder here than anywhere, because when the lights go out, there is literally one person responsible for 22 children in the dark. Overall verdict: Pniel-Landgoed is out here surviving on vibes and government funding, which honestly takes more guts than any fancy school with a Latin motto ever had.
