Public schools in the North West follow the Inland calendar.

Independent schools set their own dates and most run a week or two later. Plan camps, flights and the orthodontist around the public calendar anyway, even if your child is at an IEB school. Those are the weeks everyone else is trying to book too.
Public school applications in the North West run through the school.
Applications go through the school itself. North West is mostly paper-based, school by school. The provincial round opens in March or April and closes in June or July, for entry the following year. Late applications are usually taken from October to December for places that have not filled. Independent schools sit outside all of it and run their own admissions on their own timeline: one to three years ahead for most, and four to seven years ahead for the handful of premium boarding schools.
What the fees actually come to.
The published fee is not the number you pay. Fee-paying public schools in the middle tiers run R12,000 to R30,000 a year, and the former Model C schools at the top reach R30,000 to R60,000. Established IEB independents sit at R45,000 to R85,000. Boarding adds R45,000 to R120,000 on top of the day rate.
Then there are the extras, which no fee table includes: R3,000 to R8,000 for uniform in the first year, R1,500 to R6,000 a year for books and stationery, R8,000 to R20,000 once for the laptop that turns compulsory around Grade 4 or Grade 7 at many independents, and R500 to R5,000 a year for the building fund. A R45,000 school is usually a R60,000 to R70,000 school in year one. Check the published fee tables before you decide what you can afford, not after.
