Huhudi (Ganyesa)

Huhudi High School in Ganyesa, North West. Ganyesa. Not Sandton, not Stellenbosch, not even Potchefstroom. Ganyesa. You are out there in the North West with 1427 learners and 48 teachers, which means one teacher is basically responsible for a small village. That 29.7 to 1 ratio is not a classroom, that is a taxi. Someone is sitting on someone else's lap and the teacher is shouting "skuif julle, skuif" just to get to the whiteboard. And it is a no-fee school. Government funded, no fees, nothing coming out of your parents' pockets except stress and taxi fare. The tuck shop is probably running the entire school budget. That one aunty selling fat cakes at break is essentially the CFO of the institution. But here is where I have to stop laughing and actually take my hat off, because a 94.7% matric pass rate from a no-fee school in Ganyesa with nearly thirty kids per teacher is genuinely ridiculous. The well-resourced schools in the Southern Suburbs with their swimming pools and their "holistic development" and their fees that cost more than a second-hand Corolla are sitting quietly right now. Huhudi is out here with nothing handed to them and almost everyone crossed the finish line. That is not luck, that is hard work from both sides of the classroom. Overall verdict: Looks like nothing from the outside, hits like everything on results day, and honestly puts half of Cape Town's "top schools" to shame.
