Tsogo Secondary School in Mmakau, Brits. Brits. Not Britstown, not Britain, BRITS. The town that sounds like it should be hosting a cricket test but is really just sitting there in the North West heat doing its thing. And Tsogo is out here doing its thing too, with 928 learners and 29 teachers. Bra, 29 teachers for 928 kids. That is not a school, that is one teacher standing in a field shouting while 32 kids try to hear over the North West wind. By the time the teacher gets to you in the back row, the lesson is already over and someone has already copied the homework. No fees though. Zero rands. Free. Government no-fee school, which means the government is technically paying for your education, which means the government is doing more for these kids than some fancy private school in Sandton is doing for anyone except the parking attendant. And before you laugh at the no-fee thing, understand this school put up a 95.5% matric pass rate. Ninety. Five. Point. Five. With 32 kids per teacher and not a single school fee collected. Some of your cousins at schools charging R50k a year did not pass with that number. Just saying. Tsogo is carrying the whole North West on its back like a scholar transport taxi that is somehow still roadworthy. Overall verdict: looks rough on paper but hits harder than schools twice its budget, Tsogo is the underdog story nobody from the Southern Suburbs wants to hear about.
