Masiza (Elim)

Masiza High School in Elim, Limpopo. Elim. Not Elim the herb, not Elim the dream, just Elim. Out there in Limpopo where the baobabs outnumber the WiFi towers and the nearest Spur is probably a two-hour taxi ride away. But you know what, they showed up, so we roast with respect. Twenty-one teachers for 559 learners. That is a 26.6 to 1 ratio, which means your teacher is not your teacher, your teacher is a shepherd. On a bad day that classroom sounds less like a lesson and more like a Pick n Pay on the 1st of the month. One educator is somewhere between trying to explain photosynthesis and just accepting that twelve kids in the back are having a completely different conversation about something else entirely. Now that school description though. "It does not offer boarding facilities." Bro, that is the saddest sentence in the history of school marketing. Not "we have a state of the art gymnasium," not "our alumni are thriving," just quietly, at the end, "also there is nowhere to sleep here." And yet, with all of that, 84.6% matric pass rate. No fees, one teacher per small village, Limpopo heat that would make a braai fire feel like aircon, and they still pushed through. That is not a school, that is a survival course with a certificate at the end. Overall verdict: Masiza is underfunded, understaffed, and undersold, but somehow still outperforming half the schools that charge R50k a year and have a motivational speaker on retainer.
