Not Sandton. Not Rosebank. Walkerville. Where Google Maps takes a second look and goes "are you sure?" But hey, at least the aloes are thriving out there in the veld, even if the infrastructure might not be. Now let us talk about these numbers because 776 learners and only 28 educators is giving us a ratio of 27.7 to 1. That means one teacher is basically running a taxi rank every single day, just without the hooter. Twenty-eight educators for nearly 800 kids. That poor Grade 4 teacher is not teaching, she is surviving. She gets to school, sees 28 faces staring at her, and quietly starts counting down to December like the rest of us count down to load shedding ending. The ratio is so bad that by the time your teacher gets to your desk to help you with fractions, you have already finished matric and started a business. Co-ed, public, primary school. Nothing fancy, no Latin motto, no "holistic excellence in a nurturing Christian environment" nonsense. Just kids, aloes, and a teacher who has seen things. Overall verdict: Aloe Ridge is the school that does not pretend to be something it is not, which is honestly more than we can say for half the schools in Gauteng, and those kids from Walkerville are probably tougher for it.
