Poelano Secondary School in Vanderbijlpark, where 53 teachers woke up one morning and decided they were actually 106 teachers. Thirty-two kids per teacher, broe. Thirty-two. That is not a classroom, that is a taxi rank with a chalkboard. The teacher is not marking your book, the teacher is surviving. You think that educator knows your name? They do not even know what subject they are teaching by third period. 1726 learners though, sharp. That is basically a small town. You did not go to school, you went to a settlement. Finding your classroom on the first day of Grade 8 must have felt like trying to find a friend's house in Vanderbijlpark with no data. Just wandering around hoping someone looks familiar. And Vanderbijlpark itself, listen, it is not exactly the V&A Waterfront. The big attraction there is the steel works and a Checkers. You finish matric and the whole town throws you a braai, not because they are proud, because they want you to leave and make something of your life somewhere else. Now in fairness, 86.4% matric pass rate with those numbers and zero fees is actually not a joke, that is genuinely impressive. Those teachers are carrying a whole suburb on their backs for government salary money. Respect where respect is due. Overall verdict: Poelano is basically a pressure cooker that somehow keeps producing results, chaotic, overcrowded, and underfunded, but lowkey tougher than half the fancy schools charging R50k a year.
