Nm Tsuene High School (Pretoria)

Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, 1204 learners, 37 teachers. Thirty. Seven. That is not a staff room, that is a minibus taxi with a register. One teacher is basically responsible for 32 and a half kids, which means somewhere in that school there is half a learner just floating around, not fully accounted for, probably still waiting for their exam timetable from 2019. The Department of Basic Education really looked at this situation and said "yes, this is fine, carry on." But here is the thing that actually deserves respect, that 91.5% matric pass rate. Bru. With those ratios, with a no-fee budget, in Ga-Rankuwa, these kids are passing at rates that would embarrass some private schools in Sandton charging R80k a year for a blazer and a motivational speaker. NM Tsuene is out here doing the actual work while other schools are busy updating their Instagram with drone footage of their rugby field. The school's own description is so no-nonsense it is almost aggressive. No boarding. No Christian ethos quote. No "holistic excellence in a nurturing environment." Just, we are here, we have learners, we have educators, we follow CAPS, goodbye. That is a school that does not have time for your feelings because there are 1204 of you and 37 of them and the bell already rang. Overall verdict: Criminally under-resourced but absolutely over-performing, NM Tsuene is proof that the real matric miracle is not the pass rate, it is the teachers.
