Okay so HoëRskool Menlopark in Pretoria, 1715 learners, 113 teachers. That is basically a small town. You do not go to school here, you emigrate. First day of Grade 8 they should hand you a map and a compass because finding your classroom is its own subject. By the time you figure out where the tuck shop is, you are already in Grade 11. Now that 15.2 to 1 ratio sounds decent until you realise there are still 113 teachers trying to manage a population bigger than some Free State dorpies. And that 99.7% matric pass rate, eish, that is almost suspicious. Somewhere in Pretoria there is one kid who did not pass and that child has been haunting the school's statistics meeting every year since. The principal probably still wakes up in a cold sweat. One learner. ONE. Menlopark could not close the deal and it lives rent free in their heads. But listen, Pretoria East schools carry themselves like they invented education. The Jacaranda trees are blooming, the blazers are pressed, everyone is speaking Afrikaans with that specific confidence of someone who has never been stuck in a taxi rank in their life. And honestly? With a pass rate like that, maybe they earned a little bit of that swagger. Overall verdict: Menlopark is basically a small municipality that accidentally became a school, but if you need 99.7% of your kids to pass matric, this is the place to park them.
