Bona Lesedi Secondary School in Mamelodi, where the name means "good light" but with 1655 learners and 52 teachers, the only light anyone is seeing is the torch on their phone because Eskom is on stage 6 and the teacher is somewhere on the other side of the school trying to remember which class they are supposed to be in. One educator for every 31.8 kids, bru. That point eight of a child is just someone's backpack on a chair and honestly that backpack is getting more attention than the actual learners. No fees though, and we have to respect that. Government says this school is free, which means the tuck shop is doing HEAVY lifting as the only economy on the premises. The tuck shop aunty is basically the CFO, the HR department, and the school counsellor all in one. You want a samoosa and some life advice, she has got you. Now listen, 89.2% matric pass rate at a no-fee public school in Mamelodi with those ratios is actually not a joke, that is genuinely impressive. Those kids and teachers are working harder than a minibus taxi on a Monday morning with no shocks and a full load. The system gave them the bare minimum and they came back with nearly ninety percent. Respect where respect is due. Overall verdict: understaffed, overcrowded, and running on pure stubbornness, but quietly one of the most hardworking schools in Pretoria and the results prove it.
