Nigel High School (Nigel)

Nigel High School. Even the name sounds like someone who shows up to the braai uninvited and then eats all the boerewors. Located in Nigel, Gauteng, which is the kind of town where Google Maps pauses for a second and goes "are you sure?" You are not in Sandton. You are not in Rosebank. You are in Nigel, and the school's own description had to say "located in Nigel, Gauteng" twice, as if they were trying to convince themselves. Now listen, 1113 learners and only 45 educators. That is a ratio of nearly 25 kids per teacher. One teacher, 25 teenagers, all of them hungry, half of them on their phones, and load shedding hit at period three. That teacher is not teaching, that teacher is surviving. And the school description is so bare it just lists facts like a police statement. "It is a fee-paying institution with no boarding facilities." Brother, that is not a school description, that is a disclaimer. The 85.6% matric pass rate is actually decent though, we have to give them that. Nearly nine out of ten kids crawling out of Nigel with a certificate, which considering everything, including the location, the ratio, and a school description that reads like it was written during load shedding on someone's last five percent battery, is genuinely impressive. Overall verdict: Nigel High School is not glamorous, not fancy, and the description has zero personality, but those matric results suggest the teachers are actually working harder than the budget allows.
