Nirvana Secondary School (Johannesburg)

Nirvana. NIRVANA. Bro, the school is named after the concept of ultimate peace and enlightenment, and then they put 1,170 kids into 37 teachers' hands. That is 31 kids per teacher. There is nothing peaceful happening in those classrooms, I promise you. Kurt Cobain wrote "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and I genuinely think he was having a vision about this school's corridors on a Monday morning. Thirty-seven educators for over a thousand learners, hey. Imagine raising your hand to ask a question and the teacher has already forgotten your name, your face, and possibly your grade. The school description says "teaching staff of 37 educators" like that is something to be proud of. Bra, that is not a staff, that is a WhatsApp group. And the description is SO dry, they literally just listed themselves like a government form. No vision, no values, no nothing. Just facts on a page. The school named after enlightenment could not even enlighten us about what makes them special. That 85.9% matric pass rate is actually not bad though, credit where it is due. Those kids clearly survived the chaos and came out swinging. Honestly respect to every learner who passed in a class of 31 with one teacher probably doing double periods because someone resigned in Term 2. Overall verdict: Named after heaven, runs like a taxi rank, but the kids somehow pass anyway, which makes Nirvana the most accidentally inspiring school in Johannesburg.
