Ithuba Comunity College (Johannesburg)

Ithuba Community College in Kliprivier, one teacher for every 24 kids. Bra, that is not a school, that is one person trying to referee a taxi rank. Nine educators for 217 learners means your teacher is simultaneously explaining photosynthesis to Grade 4, marking a Grade 11 essay, and trying to remember which classroom they left their coffee in. "Community College" sounds very aspirational until you realise the community is one teacher and twenty-four kids all raising their hands at the same time. And they called themselves a "Community College" like this is California. Kliprivier, Johannesburg. Not Cape Town, not Sandton, not even Soweto where at least you have a reputation. Kliprivier. They put "independent" in the description like that makes the 24 to 1 ratio sound better. It does not. Independent just means nobody is coming to save you, not the WCED, not the DBE, not anyone. Just nine teachers, two hundred and seventeen kids, and a CAPS curriculum that nobody asked for. The school description says "fee-paying institution with no boarding facilities," which translates to: you pay, you commute, and you share a teacher with two dozen other people who also paid. That ratio means your teacher knows your name maybe once a week on a rotating schedule. Tuesday is your turn to exist. Overall verdict: Ithuba is a small school with a big name and nine very tired, very underpaid heroes who deserve a bonus, a holiday, and possibly therapy.
