De La Salle Holy Cross College (Johannesburg)

Victory Park. Not quite Sandton, not quite Linden, just kind of... there. Hanging around like that one cousin who says he "works in finance" but you're not sure doing what exactly. De La Salle Holy Cross College sounds like two schools had a meeting, couldn't agree on a name, and just combined everything on the letterhead. Catholic school, IEB curriculum, Victory Park address, and a description so dry it reads like someone filled in a government form and called it a vision statement. "Fee-paying day school with no boarding facilities." Bru. That's the school description. That's it. No soul, no warmth, just "we take your money and you go home at three." Now listen, 1095 kids and 77 teachers sounds impressive until you realise that's 14 kids per teacher, which in a Catholic school means Father Someone is absolutely losing the plot by Period 4 on a Wednesday. The IEB syllabus is there to make the fees feel worth it, and you KNOW those fees are not shy. Victory Park private school fees hit different when you're sitting in traffic on Barry Hertzog trying to explain to your parents why you need money for the Grade 10 retreat AND the Grade 11 camp AND the "voluntary" building fund. Also, a Catholic school called Holy Cross that shares a name with a La Salle brother is giving "we could not pick a saint so we picked two." Respect the commitment though, double the guilt, double the chapel visits, double the Our Fathers when you get caught behind the tuck shop. Overall verdict: A school with serious religious dedication, IEB ambition, and a description written by someone who has clearly never been to a braai, but the 14:1 ratio means your kid might actually get some attention.
