Ah, Crawford International Bedfordview. "International." That word is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, boet. International how exactly? Is the tuck shop serving croissants now? Did they hire one teacher from Zimbabwe and call it a multicultural experience? Crawford loves slapping "International" on things the way Joburg property developers call a flatlet a "luxury apartment." Bedfordview though. Right there between the OR Tambo flight path and the East Rand energy. You are not quite Sandton, you are not quite the East Rand proper, you are just sort of... there. Hovering. Like a guy at a braai who did not bring anything but is still at the front of the meat queue. The school probably tells parents it is "centrally located" when what they mean is you can hear the planes landing while you are writing your maths paper. And it is a combined school, co-educational, the full package. So you have got Grade Rs running into matrics in the corridor, little six-year-olds getting shoulder-charged by a Varsity Cup hopeful late for Economics. The whole zoo under one "International" roof. Crawford as a brand has that very specific energy of a school that charges private school fees while promising you the world and delivering a solid, fine, perfectly acceptable education. Which is not nothing. But it is also not what the brochure implied. Overall verdict: Crawford International Bedfordview is what happens when a school's marketing budget is bigger than its identity, but honestly, the kids probably turn out alright.
