Brakpan. BRAKPAN. The school's own description couldn't even dress it up, just said "located in Brakpan" and moved on like it was announcing a funeral. No "nestled in a vibrant community" or "gateway to the East Rand." Just Brakpan. Respect for the honesty, zero respect for the location. This is a place where the wind doesn't blow away your problems, it just brings more dust from the mine dumps. Now 36 educators for 738 kids is a 20.5 to 1 ratio, which means every teacher is basically a taxi driver, just packing them in and hoping everyone arrives safely. One teacher looking out at 20 kids thinking "I did not sign up for this, I studied for four years." The description also proudly mentions "no boarding facilities," which honestly tracks because why would anyone choose to SLEEP in Brakpan when they could go home. But here is where it gets complicated, because that 99.3% matric pass rate is absolutely filthy. In a good way. Stoffberg said forget what you think about us, forget the dust, forget the 20 kids per teacher, forget that the school description sounds like a Wikipedia stub written at 11pm. These kids are passing. Nearly every single one of them. That is not luck, that is a school that actually works. Overall verdict: Looks like a dusty East Rand underdog on paper, hits like a school that quietly outperforms half of Sandton.
