Okay so Ecco Primary in Ventersburg, Free State. Ventersburg. Not Johannesburg, not Cape Town, not even Bloemfontein. Ventersburg. The kind of town where the biggest event of the year is when the traffic light gets fixed. Respect for holding it down out there, genuinely, but let us not pretend anyone is putting Ventersburg on a map anytime soon. Now 872 kids and only 28 teachers. That is a 31 to 1 ratio, which means your teacher is basically a taxi driver trying to fit everyone in. "Skuif op, there is space for three more, I said SKUIF OP." One teacher, thirty one kids, all trying to learn at the same time. That is not a classroom, that is a braai that got out of hand. Someone is definitely not getting attention and someone is definitely drawing on the desk. The school's own description says, and I quote, "does not offer boarding facilities." Broe. Nobody asked. Nobody was packing their bags to go board at Ecco Primary in Ventersburg. That line is doing a lot of heavy lifting for a school that is free to attend and has one teacher per small army of children. Overall verdict: Ecco Primary is out here in the Free State trenches, free of charge, no excuses, feeding nearly 900 kids through the system with a skeleton crew, which honestly makes it tougher than half the R50,000 a year schools that still cannot produce a decent matric pass rate.
