Ipetleng Secondary in Petrusburg, Free State. Petrusburg. Jy weet hoe is dit, when your town name sounds like someone sneezed halfway through saying "Peterburg" and just gave up. But listen, 784 learners, 25 teachers. Twenty. Five. That is not a staff room, that is a WhatsApp group that is too big to be useful. One teacher is basically running a small municipality on their own, 31 kids deep, probably teaching Maths, Life Orientation, AND keeping the peace at break time all before 10am. Now here is the thing that makes you choke on your boerewors roll. This school is no-fee, government funded, somewhere in the Free State with resources that probably disappear faster than Eskom power in stage 6, and they are pulling a 94.9% matric pass rate. Bru. NINETY FOUR POINT NINE. Schools in the Southern Suburbs with fancy fees and a water feature in the foyer cannot say that. The government sends these teachers 25 deep into 784 learners and they are STILL outperforming your cousin's private school in Stellenbosch. Embarrassing for the fancy schools honestly. Ipetleng literally means "help yourselves" in Sesotho, and clearly that is exactly what these kids did, because the system was not exactly rushing to help them first. They helped themselves straight to a pass rate that slaps. Overall verdict: Chronically under-resourced, staffed like a skeleton crew on a pirate ship, located in a town that Google Maps probably argues with itself about, but somehow producing results that make better-funded schools look like they are wasting everyone's time and money.
