Ladybrand S/S, sitting in Ladybrand, Free State, looking like the most no-nonsense school in the country. The school description reads like someone just copied straight from a government form and said "ja, that'll do." No vision statement, no inspiring quote, no mention of values or excellence or "nurturing the whole child." Just, we have 505 kids, 29 teachers, we follow CAPS, we charge fees, we have no boarding. Bru. Even the school prospectus gave up halfway through. Now those 29 teachers are carrying 505 learners at a 17.4 to 1 ratio, which honestly is not the worst situation in the Free State, but we know how it goes. One teacher sick, one teacher on a course, one teacher "busy with admin," and suddenly Meneer is teaching four subjects on a Tuesday afternoon while load shedding kicks in and nobody can see the board anyway. But here is the thing that absolutely kills me. A school that sounds this dry, this administrative, this "we-are-not-here-to-impress-you," went and pulled a 95.7% matric pass rate. In Ladybrand. In the Free State. No boarding, no fancy description, no inspirational mission statement, just chalk and vibes and somehow nearly everyone passed. Ladybrand said less talking, more passing. Overall verdict: Looks like the most boring school brochure you have ever read, but clearly the teachers actually showed up, and that 95.7% is doing all the talking.
