Independent schools sit outside all of it and run their own admissions on their own timeline: one to three years ahead for most, and four to seven years ahead for the handful of premium boarding schools.
What the fees actually come to.
The published fee is not the number you pay. Fee-paying public schools in the middle tiers run R12,000 to R30,000 a year, and the former Model C schools at the top reach R30,000 to R60,000. Established IEB independents sit at R45,000 to R85,000. Boarding adds R45,000 to R120,000 on top of the day rate.
Then there are the extras, which no fee table includes: R3,000 to R8,000 for uniform in the first year, R1,500 to R6,000 a year for books and stationery, R8,000 to R20,000 once for the laptop that turns compulsory around Grade 4 or Grade 7 at many independents, and R500 to R5,000 a year for the building fund.
