D Z Dumezweni Senior Secondary School (Ntlaza)

Eighty-nine learners per teacher. No wait, sorry, THIRTY-EIGHT learners per teacher. One educator, thirty-eight teenagers, and zero fees. That teacher is not a professional, that is a hero. That is a person who wakes up every morning, looks at thirty-eight faces staring back at them, and chooses violence. Voluntarily. In Ngqeleni. In the Eastern Cape. With no boarding facilities, which means these kids are travelling to school from Ntlaza and back every day just to sit in a class that looks like a taxi rank on a Monday morning. And then, after all of that, after one teacher somehow holding thirty-eight learners together with determination and maybe a broken piece of chalk, this school posts a 90.6% matric pass rate. Ngeke. A school with no fees, no boarding, eighteen educators for nearly seven hundred learners, deep in the Eastern Cape, and they are out here passing matric better than some R50,000 a year schools in the Southern Suburbs. Some private school in Constantia with a swimming pool and a "holistic development programme" is sweating right now. The description does not even try to big itself up. No mission statement. No "nurturing future leaders." Just, here is the school, here are the kids, here are the teachers, we get it done. That kind of energy is rarer than Eskom keeping the lights on in July. Overall verdict: The building might not be much, but the results are embarrassing schools with ten times the budget, and that deserves serious respect.
