Molteno High School, a combined school in Molteno, Eastern Cape, where 411 kids share 19 teachers between them. That is a 21.6 to 1 ratio, broe. That is not a classroom, that is a taxi. A teacher walks in and someone is already hanging out the window screaming "voooool!" You are not getting individual attention, you are getting a nod from across the room if you are lucky. And listen, 81.8% matric pass rate. That sounds decent until you remember that 18.2% of those kids sat through years of that taxi-classroom experience and still did not make it. Nineteen teachers carrying 411 learners through the Eastern Cape curriculum like they are moving furniture up a mountain with no bakkie. Respect to the teachers honestly, that is a hard job. But Molteno itself, jy weet hoe is dit. This is not Cape Town, there is no mountain to look at when you are bored in class. You are in the Karoo-adjacent Eastern Cape where the most exciting thing that happens is probably a dog crossing the main road. Combined school means they threw primary and high school together and said "sort it out, kids." Little Grade 4s walking past the matrics every morning like they wandered into the wrong braai. Overall verdict: Molteno High is a scrappy underdog school doing solid work with very few resources in a very quiet town, and honestly that 81.8% hits harder than it looks.
