Middelburg High School, sitting out there in the Eastern Cape Karoo where the wind blows hot, the roads go nowhere, and the nearest excitement is a truck stopping at the Engen. Two hundred learners, eleven teachers, and a school description so dry it reads like the landscape outside. "It is a fee-paying school with no boarding facilities." Bra, that is the saddest sentence I have ever read. You are paying fees AND you have to go home every day to Middelburg. There is no escape. You just have to be there, in Middelburg, every single day. Eleven educators for two hundred kids sounds fine until you remember one of them is definitely the principal who stopped teaching in 2009, one is on stress leave, and one only does Life Orientation which everyone knows does not count. So really you have got eight people holding this whole operation together in the middle of the Karoo. Respect, honestly. That is a special kind of commitment. But listen, a 93.1% matric pass rate from a school with 200 learners and 11 teachers in a town most people drive through without stopping? That is actually not a joke, that is impressive. Those kids and teachers are putting in the work while the rest of us are distracted by load shedding and fibre outages they probably do not even have out there. Overall verdict: Middelburg High School looks like the final level of a video game nobody wanted to play, but somehow the players are winning.
