Okay so R H Godlo Junior Primary in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape. Government no-fee school, 944 kids, 27 teachers, and a ratio of 35 learners to every one teacher. Thirty. Five. To. One. Bro that teacher is not teaching a class, that teacher is managing a small stadium. You know how chaotic a taxi rank gets at 5pm on a Friday? That is basically what this teacher walks into every single morning, except the taxi rank does not ask you to explain long division. 944 learners at a junior primary. These are small children, and there are almost a thousand of them. The one teacher at the back of that classroom is not marking books, that teacher is just vibing and hoping for the best. You cannot make eye contact with 35 Grade 2s and survive. That is a survival situation, not a lesson plan. But listen, this is a no-fee school in Mdantsane and those teachers are showing up every day for those kids with almost nothing. That is not a joke, that is actually hard. The Eastern Cape government has been underfunding schools like this for years and the teachers and communities just keep going. R H Godlo is not the problem here, the people running education from their nice offices are the problem. Overall verdict: Chaotic, overcrowded, and running on fumes, but somehow still standing, and that is honestly more impressive than half the fee-paying schools in the country.
