Maluti Senior Secondary School, sitting all the way out in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, where the wind comes from the Drakensberg and the nearest Pick n Pay is probably a two hour taxi ride away. You are not in Constantia, bra. You are deep in it. But respect where respect is due, they kept the lights on and the school running, and that is already a flex when half the country cannot manage that. Now listen. Twenty six educators. Nine hundred and sixty six learners. Do the math, that is one teacher standing in front of thirty seven kids trying to explain calculus while someone at the back is probably asleep and someone else is drawing on their desk. Thirty seven to one, my friend. That teacher is not a teacher, that is a shepherd. A very tired shepherd with one whiteboard marker and no load shedding backup plan. But here is the thing that kills me. These kids, in Matatiele, with thirty seven of them per teacher, no fees, deep rural Eastern Cape, they pulled an 89.6% matric pass rate. Eighty nine point six. Some fancy fee school in Bishopscourt with iPads and a wellness coordinator cannot even say that with a straight face. Maluti did that with nothing but grit and a staff room that is probably also the storage room. Overall verdict: Understaffed, underfunded, and somehow still outperforming schools that charge more per term than some people earn in a year, absolute legends.
