Umthawelanga Senior Secondary School in Maclear, Eastern Cape. Maclear. That is so far into the Eastern Cape that load shedding probably arrives two days late because even Eskom forgot the place exists. But you know what, the school is out there doing its thing, 1327 learners deep in Sonwabile, which is already a whole vibe. Now let us talk about this ratio. Forty learners to one teacher. FORTY. That teacher is not teaching a class, that teacher is managing a taxi rank. A full KTC taxi rank, peak hour, everybody pushing, nobody sitting down, and the teacher is just there shouting "sharp sharp, page 47, MOVE." Thirty three educators for over thirteen hundred kids, jy weet hoe is dit, that staffroom must be the quietest room in the whole school because nobody has time to sit in it. But here is where I have to put down my brannas and give credit where it is due. One hundred percent matric pass rate. ONE HUNDRED. Not ninety nine point something, not "we almost got there," a clean hundred. No fees, Eastern Cape, forty kids per teacher, and every single matric student passed. The WCED must be looking at this school sideways like, "how?" Half the well-funded schools in the Southern Suburbs cannot say that. Overall verdict: The building probably has more learners than it was designed for, the teachers are basically superheroes without capes, but Umthawelanga is out here in Maclear quietly embarrassing schools that charge R50k a year.
