The provincial round opens in March or April and closes in June or July, for entry the following year. Late applications are usually taken from October to December for places that have not filled. Then there are the extras, which no fee table includes: R3,000 to R8,000 for uniform in the first year, R1,500 to R6,000 a year for books and stationery, R8,000 to R20,000 once for the laptop that turns compulsory around Grade 4 or Grade 7 at many independents, and R500 to R5,000 a year for the building fund. A R45,000 school is usually a R60,000 to R70,000 school in year one. Check the published fee tables before you decide what you can afford, not after.
