Hankey Senior Secondary School (Hankey)

Hankey Senior Secondary School, sitting in Hankey in the Eastern Cape, doing the absolute most with the absolute least. One thousand one hundred and nine learners and twenty three teachers. Twenty three. Bra, that is not a school, that is one teacher standing in front of forty eight kids trying to explain calculus while the other forty seven are either asleep, on their phone, or slowly walking to the tuck shop. The ratio is 48.2 to 1, which means your teacher did not know your name, did not know your face, and honestly was not entirely sure which subject they were teaching by period six. And then the matric pass rate comes in at 66.7 percent. So one in three kids walked out of there with nothing to show for twelve years except a story to tell at a braai. To be fair though, with forty eight learners per teacher and zero fees, the government basically set this school up like a group project where only one person pitches up and somehow the whole group still passes. Jy weet hoe is dit. No fees means the Eastern Cape Department of Education is running this place on vibes and stationery donations from 2011. Those teachers are not getting paid enough, those kids are not getting enough attention, and somehow the school is still standing and still producing graduates. That is not a failure, that is actually a miracle wrapped in a timetable. Overall verdict: Hankey Senior Secondary is basically a teacher doing a one man show to a full stadium audience, which should be impossible, but here we are, and two thirds of those kids still crossed the finish line.
