Mboleni Technical School (Engcobo)

Mboleni Technical School in Engcobo, Eastern Cape. A combined school, which means they teach everyone from the tiny ones still figuring out how to hold a pencil all the way up to matric, all in one place. That is either very impressive or very chaotic, and given that there are 361 learners and only 16 educators, I am leaning towards chaotic. One teacher for every 22.6 kids. Point six of a kid. Someone got chopped in half just to make the ratio work and that is the most technical thing happening at a technical school. Now look, it is a no-fee school, which means the government is footing the bill, which also means the government is involved, which means jy weet hoe is dit. The Eastern Cape Department of Education has the same energy as load shedding, it shows up when it wants to, disappears when you need it most, and nobody is ever fully sure who is in charge. Engcobo is not exactly getting the same attention as the schools in the Southern Suburbs where parents pay R50k a year to watch their kids lose at rugby. But here is the thing, Mboleni is out there in Engcobo doing the work with 16 teachers, no fees, and zero fuss. No fancy prospectus, no Latin motto, no "holistic development of the whole child" nonsense. Just people showing up. Overall verdict: Underfunded, understaffed, and completely unbothered about impressing anyone, which honestly makes it more real than half the schools in this country.
