The short version

UCT does not formally rank schools. But by volume of accepted students, a small group of Cape Town public and private schools consistently send the most matriculants into UCT each year: Westerford, SACS, Bishops, Rondebosch Boys, Wynberg Girls, Rustenburg Girls, Herzlia, and a handful of others. From outside Cape Town, premium boarding schools (Hilton, Michaelhouse, Grey College) and Pretoria's top publics (Pretoria Boys, Pretoria Girls) consistently place students. The school you attend matters less than your matric marks, but the strongest schools have the academic culture that produces those marks.

How UCT actually admits students

UCT does not maintain a published list of preferred feeder schools. It admits based on a combination of:

  • Matric marks (NSC or IEB) converted into the Faculty Points Score, often called the APS.
  • Specific subject requirements by faculty (Mathematics minimum 60% for BCom, Physical Science for engineering, Life Sciences for health sciences, etc.).
  • The National Benchmark Test (NBT) for some faculties, particularly health sciences and engineering.
  • Equity considerations through the Admissions Policy that weights applicants from different demographic and geographic backgrounds.

The school name is not a factor in admissions decisions. What matters is the marks the student produces. The reason certain schools dominate UCT entry is that they consistently produce large numbers of students with the marks UCT requires.

Top Cape Town feeder schools to UCT

Cape Town schools have a structural advantage because UCT is local. They send the largest volumes year after year. The most consistent feeders, by approximate volume:

  • South African College Schools (SACS). English-medium boys' school in Newlands. Strong academic outcomes, deep UCT links going back over a century.
  • Westerford High School. Co-ed English-medium public in Rondebosch. Highest-performing public high school in the country by many measures. Routinely sends 100+ matriculants to UCT each year.
  • Bishops Diocesan College. Premium private boys' school in Rondebosch. Strong UCT pipeline, particularly into BCom, BBusSci, and BHSc.
  • Rondebosch Boys' High School. Fee-paying public boys' school in Rondebosch. Strong academic and sporting outputs.
  • Wynberg Boys' High School and Wynberg Girls' High School. Strong public schools in Wynberg with consistent UCT pipeline.
  • Rustenburg Girls' High School. Established public girls' school in Rondebosch. Strong academic record and humanities feeder.
  • Herzlia. Jewish co-ed independent on the Sea Point side. Strong academic culture and consistent UCT placement.
  • St Cyprian's School. Anglican girls' school in Oranjezicht. Smaller school size, high academic standards.
  • Pinelands High School. Co-ed public. Strong academic record, consistent UCT entrant.
  • Springfield Convent. Catholic girls' independent in Wynberg.
  • Camps Bay High School. Co-ed public, strong humanities and arts feeder.
  • Sea Point High School. Co-ed public, growing academic record.

Volume matters here. Westerford and SACS are large schools, so their absolute numbers into UCT look big. A smaller school like St Cyprian's sends fewer students in total but at a very high proportion of its matric cohort.

Strong feeder schools from outside Cape Town

From elsewhere in South Africa, several schools consistently send students to UCT in meaningful numbers. The most established:

  • Hilton College and Michaelhouse (KZN Midlands). Premium boys' boarding schools. Strong IEB academic record and consistent national university placement.
  • St Andrew's College and DSG Grahamstown (Makhanda). Eastern Cape boarding schools with strong UCT pipelines.
  • Pretoria Boys High and Pretoria High School for Girls. Pretoria's top fee-paying public schools. Strong national university placement across UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch, and UP.
  • St John's College (Johannesburg). Premium boys' independent. Strong placement record.
  • Roedean School (Johannesburg). Premium girls' independent. Strong UCT pipeline particularly into humanities and law.
  • Grey College (Bloemfontein). Strong public boys' school with strong national university placement, especially commerce and engineering.
  • Affies (Hoer Seunskool, Pretoria). Strong Afrikaans-medium output, with growing UCT placement alongside the traditional UP and Stellenbosch routes.
  • St Stithians College (Johannesburg). Co-ed independent, broad national university placement.
  • Crawford Lonehill and Crawford Pretoria. ADvTECH IEB schools with strong UCT pipelines.

What actually matters for UCT admission

The school name on your child's matric certificate is not what gets them into UCT. What gets them in is:

  1. Their actual matric marks. Specifically the subjects that count towards the faculty's APS calculation. A 95% Maths student from any school beats a 75% Maths student from any school for BCom Actuarial.
  2. Their subject choice in Grade 9. Choosing Maths Literacy instead of Mathematics rules out most BCom and all engineering, health sciences, and science faculties at UCT. This decision is made when the child is roughly 14 years old.
  3. Their NBT scores for the relevant faculties. The NBT is a separate written test and not all schools prepare students for it well.
  4. Application discipline. Apply online at uct.ac.za by the published deadline (typically late July of the matric year). Late applications are usually rejected regardless of marks.
  5. Subject-specific minimums. Each faculty has non-negotiable subject minimums. Below the minimum, the faculty cannot admit regardless of total score.

The reason the top feeder schools dominate is not preferential treatment by UCT. It is that these schools produce students with the marks UCT requires, in volume, year after year. Their subject choice culture, exam preparation, and academic norms all align with what UCT's admissions process rewards.

The APS score and faculty cutoffs

UCT calculates a Faculty Points Score (commonly the APS) using a subject-weighted formula. The exact formula varies by faculty. Approximate 2026 minimum cutoffs (these change yearly, confirm with UCT directly):

  • BA (Humanities): APS around 470 with English minimum 60%
  • BSocSci: APS around 470
  • BCom (general): APS around 480 with Mathematics minimum 70%
  • BCom Actuarial Science: APS around 540 with Mathematics minimum 90%
  • BBusSci: APS around 530
  • BEng (Engineering): APS around 510 with Maths and Physical Science minimum 70%
  • BSc (Science): APS around 470 with relevant subject minimums
  • MBChB (Medicine): APS around 600 plus NBT minimums plus equity weightings
  • LLB: APS around 480 with English minimum 70%

These are entry-level estimates. The actual successful applicant will usually exceed these by 30 to 80 points. For the most competitive faculties (Medicine, Actuarial Science) the practical cutoff is significantly higher than the published minimum.

Frequently asked questions

Does UCT prefer certain schools?

No. UCT's admissions policy is based on matric marks, subject minimums, NBT scores where required, and equity considerations. The school name does not feature in the decision. Schools that send large volumes of students to UCT do so because they produce graduates with the marks UCT requires, not because of any institutional preference.

Which school sends the most students to UCT?

Westerford High School and SACS are consistently among the largest feeder schools by volume, alongside Bishops, Rondebosch Boys, Wynberg Girls, and Rustenburg Girls. The exact rankings shift year to year and UCT does not publish an official list.

Is it harder to get into UCT from a school outside Cape Town?

No, not based on school location. UCT admits on marks and equity considerations. Schools from outside Cape Town like Hilton, Michaelhouse, St Andrew's Grahamstown, Pretoria Boys, Roedean, and Grey College all consistently place students. The Cape Town schools dominate by volume because of proximity, not preferential admission.

When should I apply to UCT?

The UCT online application opens in April or May of the matric year and typically closes at the end of July. Applications for the following year of study. Apply at applyonline.uct.ac.za. Late applications are usually not considered.

Do I need to write the NBT for UCT?

For most faculties yes, particularly Health Sciences, Commerce, Engineering, Law, and Humanities. The NBT Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy tests are standard. Health Sciences requires the additional NBT Mathematics test. Confirm with the specific UCT faculty before registering.
